Positive Ray

Empowering Communities and Churches to tackle the impact of HIV and AIDS.

(SIM SA Project Number ZA 97488)

An estimated 5.7 million people were living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa in 2009, more than in any other country.

Prevention Program: We aim to educate community members of the effects of HIV and AIDS. We encourage people to know their status and offer Voluntary Counseling and Testing services to communities and schools. This is proving to be a great success.

In our Home Based Care Program we aim to improve quality of life for people living with HIV through a high quality home based palliative care program. Trained community based workers carry out home based care duties. They also show the family memebers how to best look after the patient, and have the opportunity to receive Voluntary Counseling and Testing and bereavement counseling.

PEER EDUCATION PROGRAM – GOLD: We use the GOLD (Generation Of Leaders Discovered) program to facilitate and conduct prevention education and leadership training in schools. It proofs to be making impact in helping young people to discover themselves. The Schools Program creates awareness of HIV and AIDS and encourages youth to adopt healthy lifestyles (reduce risk of infections), and postpone sexual debut. We saw success when 57 young people were tested in one school and only two tested positive. A survey in the schools we serve revealed that the rate of teenage pregnancies in these schools has drastically reduced since we started working there.

MINISTRY PROGRAM:   The ministry program filters into all that we do through Bible Studies, Pastor’s Conferences, and replicating our work throughout South Africa, and possibly beyond.

Satellite Projects: 2009 saw Positive Ray being replicated in Gauteng through Positive Ray Reef. By now other churches have started responding to the call and 5 Satellite Projects (Positive Ray Reef, Positive Ray Emmanuel, Positive Ray Primrose, Positive Ray Mdoni, Positive Ray Louisiana) continue with this work .

Positive Ray provides support to its satellite projects through training, exposure and resource sharing.

Positive Ray is a founding member of the Ugu Aids Alliance (UAA), based in Port Shepstone. The UAA, formalized in 2007,  aims to promote networking amongst organizations and reduce service duplication.
